Bellingham Farmers Market Opens Today!

Woohoo! Today (Saturday, April 5, 2014) is the official opening of the 22nd season of the Bellingham Farmers Market! At 10am Mayor Kelli Linville will do the traditional tossing of the cabbage and the opening bell will ring to open the Market.
Over 20 new vendors will be doing business this year, with new farms on the list including: Bluebelle Gardens, Leaky Dam Farm, Mariposa Farm, Outer County Farm, Purple Horse Garden, and Spring Time Farm. Skagit Valley Cured Meats sounds interesting, too. What new local foods and varieties will they be offering? I can’t wait to see!
Do you suppose anyone will have asparagus? Oh, the anticipation!
Also–big drum roll, please!–we’ll get our first look at the new updated edition of the Whatcom Food & Farm Finder (WFFF)! This is a locavore’s best friend for finding the foods you love and the farmers who grow them. See who is offering CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture programs) this year, who uses sustainable practices, where you can hand-pick your own strawberries–and so much more. The WFFF is published and updated every year by Sustainable Connections, our own go-to nonprofit organization for encouraging and supporting businesses who care about the environment. Stop by the Sustainable Connections booth today and pick up your own copy.
Besides farmers and Sustainable Connections, there will be lots of ready-to-eat foods (as in come and have an amazing lunch!), artisans of all kinds, and other nonprofit organizations ready to talk with you about the good things they are bringing about in our little corner of heaven. And don’t miss the buskers for music and general hilarity!
Weather forecasts suggest morning will be the ideal time to drop by at the Depot Market Square on Railroad between Chestnut and Maple in downtown Bellingham. Later in the afternoon the chance of rain may increase, though the Market will be open until 3pm.
